Mother Knows Best - The Natural Way To Train Your Dog
Carol Lea Benjamin
Great book to help raise young pups to adulthood. Easy to read, with
short sections so you can pick up a concept in a quick read. Many pictures,
both drawings and photos, to help illustrate a concept. Carol is easy to
read without getting technical, and she teaches you to understand some of
what your pup says to you, so you can communicate back.

Surviving Your Dog's Adolescence - A Positive Training Program
Carol Lea Benjamin
Her newer book focuses on the teenage time for pups (roughly between 6
and 18 months of age). This is the worst time of your pup's life with you -
because they conveniently "forget" things they should know, and test their
position in your household. This book will help you endure this period and
help you remain in control and your dog to learn to fit in.

Training in No Time :
An Expert's Approach to Effective Dog Training for Hectic Life Styles
Amy Ammen
Great easy reading book with man photos to demonstrate concepts. Many
easy ideas for leadership and control.

Good Owners, Great Dogs
Brian Kilcommons
Good all-around book for puppies and adolescents with a lot of photos and
short segments. Great concepts and ideas. This could almost be a picture
book for those impatient readers who want to know everything NOW!

People, Pooches and Problems
Job Michael Evans
One of my most favorite trainers of all time. He was a Monk, and went off
on his own. He has great ideas for training and leadership. This book is
ESPECIALLY important for those of you who own problem dogs, but can also be
useful for those of you who want to AVOID problems. His 4Rs program is one
of the first of its kind - and has saved many a dog.

Childproofing Your Dog :
A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog for the Children in Your Life
Brian Kilcommons
Great, short, inexpensive book on a touchy subject - a book to get BEFORE
you have a child!!

The Right Dog for You
Daniel Tortora
Great book that categorizes MANY breeds in MANY ways: activity,
trainability, protection, reactions to strangers, kids, etc. Good book to
help you in your search for YOUR perfect dog. Does NOT gloss over breeds to
satisfy everyone. He will tell it LIKE IT IS!

Dog Training Projects for Young People
Joel M. McMains
Good projects for kids - SUPERVISED, of course - and dogs. Could be used
in a 4-H group too! A good version of methods used to train kids and dogs
for obedience competition.

Dogs and Kids - Parenting Tips
Bardi McLennan
Another good book on kids and dogs, and parental supervision! Great
explanations on why to take your dog to an obedience class as well as what
behaviors are good (and not so good) for owners to encourage and appropriate
behaviors for owners to develop in their dogs and kids.

The Dog IQ Test
Melissa Miller
Great Book filled with different tests to do with your dog to see how
"intelligent" he is. Many involve problem solving, like putting a treat
under a towel and seeing how long it takes your dog to get it. Also has a
"recommended dog breeds by owner type" and tests to see what type of owner
you are.

The Canine Good Citizen - Every Dog Can Be One
Joachim and Wendy Volhard
Good training guide to help you train your dog (and you!) to be a good
ambassador for dogs - one that doesn't jump on, growl at, or knock over
people (or you!), one that will be welcomed at ball games and in parks, etc.
Great pictures and explanations in short segments.

Dog Behavior and Training - Veterinary Advice for Dog Owners
Compiled by Lowell Ackerman, DVM
A veterinary behavior-type guide, written by the country's leading
veterinary behaviorists. Focuses on problem behaviors, but also has insight
into normal behaviors, training and how dogs learn.

Dogsmart
Myrna Milani, DVM
GREAT BOOK! Helps you to explore what you want in a dog, how dogs are,
training, and maintaining a good working relationship with your dog. She
also wrote "The Body Language and Emotion of Dogs"). This is a good book to
get BEFORE you get a dog!

Dog-Perfect : The User Friendly Guide to a Well Behaved Dog
Sarah Hodgson
A computer knock off kind of book, useful for many quick reading concepts
for training and maintaining your dog. Good short, but to the point, writing
so you can get a concept quickly...like while cooking dinner!

The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog
Terry Ryan
Great new book that helps you regain leadership and control in a
non-aggressive way. Your dog will learn that complying with your wishes is
the best way to go!

Second-Hand Dog
Carol Lea Benjamin
Inexpensive, small paperback book designed to help assimilate a shelter
or rescue dog into your household.

Don't Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training
Karen Pryor
Karen is a marine animal trainer who has given us all insight into
positive reinforcement training techniques that will work on dogs and people
as well. She didn't really write this book as a dog-training guide (I found
my copy in the psychology section in the bookstore!) but her techniques will
work well. This book describes the way that many trainers have now chosen to
train their dogs.

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend:
A Training Manual for Dog Owners
The Monks of New Skete

The Art of Raising a Puppy
The Monks of New Skete
These books are very decent and helpful. The Monks have raised German
Shepherds for MANY years in upstate New York and have tried and proven
methods for raising a dog. These books have more text than photos and can be
heavy, but worthwhile, reading. |
